PGC kicked sand in the Sportsmen’s faces again
By Blaine Toy

Our so call game commission has continuously lied to the public with fake harvest reports over the last several years. They pay no attention to the hunters that support them through license sales, and taxes on hunting gear.

Now at their meeting on March 9, 2019 they totally voted against the hunters by voting to change deer opener from the first Monday after Thanksgiving to the first Saturday. All polls were strongly against changing deer opener, but the commissioner’s voted 5 for changing and 3 for not changing. The five commissioners voting against the hunters were (Dennis R. Fredericks, Region 2 - Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Washington, Westmoreland counties, Term: 6/5/2018 - 6/5/2022), (Scott H. Foradora, Region 3 - Cameron, Centre, Clearfield, Clinton, Elk, Jefferson, McKean, Potter Counties, Term: 6/5/2018 - 6/5/2022), (Charles E. Fox, Region 5 - Bradford, Columbia, Lycoming, Montour, Northumberland, Sullivan, Tioga, Union Counties, Term: 10/15/2012 - 10/15/2020), (Stanley Knick Jr., Region 7 - Carbon, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe, Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne, Wyoming Counties, Term: 7/17/17 - 7/17/21), and (Brian H. Hoover, Region 8 - Berks, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lehigh, Montgomery, Northampton, Philadelphia, Schuylkill Counties, Term: 06/25/2012 - 06/25/2020). Supporting the hunters were James R. Daley, Tim Layton, and Michael Mitrick.

It is my opinion we hunters should call Governor Wolfe (717-787-2500), your Senator, your Representative, PGC Executive Director Burhans (717-787-4250), Game and Fish Committee, Senate Chair Daniel Laughlin (717-787-8927), Minority Chair James R. Brewster (717-787-5580), Representative Chair Gillespie (717-705-7167), and Democrat Chair William C. Kortz, II (717-787-8175) and ask for resignation of these Commissioner’s voting against hunters.

When PGC changed bear season opener from Monday to Saturday this ruin a hunting tradition. With the Monday opener many hunters would hunt Monday and Tuesday then Wednesday spend traveling home for family meals on Thanksgiving. Once PGC changed it to Saturday the hunters would hunt Saturday opener only. This created loss of revenue to the business and non-profits that held events over the week-end prior to bear opening.
Changing this hunting deer opener is going to harm holiday family traditions causing many conflicts between going hunting and family get togethers. Family members from away from home now could travel for family dinners not being concerned with family members leaving to hunt or not having time to get back home to hunt yourself. Now with a Saturday opener many family’s traditional dinner will be interrupted with hunters not attending. This is also going to cause more financial hardship on the businesses counting on hunter purchases and non-profits normally holding fund raising event that week-end between Thanksgiving and deer opener.
