Fishing for Help at the Shows
Most trout fishermen have participated in a yearly opening-day
pilgrimage to their favorite water, and many have managed to get
in additional days of angling this spring. Memorial Day weekend
was the next big fishing turnout, and soon we will be into the regular
bass fishing season in June. Let's move to another hotspot, and
we'll talk a bit about fishing for help - help to spread the word
about the USP.
Over the past year, the USP has participated in many major sports
shows across Pennsylvania. We have also been present for tabletop
displays at the big-box sporting goods retailers. In addition, the
USP regularly makes presentations at sporting clubs throughout the
state.
This type of public relations effort takes its toll on a board
of directors of 18 members. Traditionally, the board members and
some of the hardiest among our members have been carrying the entire
load of staffing the display tables. With an expected increase in
club appearances, and the possibility of participating in some county
fairs, we could really use some help.
Anyone who enjoys talking with other sportsmen who share our views
should consider this as an invitation for volunteering to put in
some "show time." There is no experience necessary. Folks
who have an interest in recruiting new members, discussing ongoing
happenings that affect our sport, and who have a genuine interest
in promoting and strengthening USP messages on habitat, deer management,
legislation, and the future of hunting, fishing, trapping and shooting
are more than welcome.
You don't have to be an expert in any particular area or interest.
You will not be put out there on a lone mission; there will always
be at least one seasoned show participant at your side. We can't
always answer every question or concern to the satisfaction of the
visitors to our display table, but the conversation is generally
healthy, and the serious inquiries that require authoritative responses
can always be brought back to the USP leadership for a response.
If you enjoy meeting people, talking about our outdoor sports,
have an interest in recruiting members, and truly want an opportunity
to preserve and promote our sporting interests, please volunteer.
