Timber...

We have all heard the complaining from the timber industry regarding the alleged adverse affects that deer have on the forests, and on the timber industry. It has not been acid rain, poor harvest management, or other causes. It culprit has always been the deer. The DCNR has certainly been a cheerleader for this industry group. This was always a bit difficult to accept as a single cause of mediocre forests in PA. Now, after reading a new brochure from the PA Dept of Agriculture entitled “Pennsylvania Hardwoods for the World” I suggest that the claims against the deer herd should be discarded.

Here’s a few excerpts from the brocure:

* PA leads the USA in hardwood lumber production.
* PA is known as the Black Cherry Capital of the World.
* PA is the #1 state in hardwood lumber exports.
* PA hardwoods are known throughout the world for their quality, sustainability, and beauty.
* The statewide timber volume growth continues to grow, increasing 20% in the last decade.
* The state-managed forest (2.1 million acres) is the largest single-holding of FSC certified hardwood forest in the US.

Unless the brochure was prepared with bogus input. The readers are led to believe that PA forests are healthy and productive.

The Numbers Don’t Lie

By Greg Levengood

On April 21-22, the Pa. Game Commission will hold its quarterly meeting to give final approval to the seasons and bag limits that were proposed at the January meeting. Of particular interest to deer hunters is the proposal to alter the concurrent firearms deer season in four Wildlife Management Units. In WMUs 2D, 2G, 3C and 4B, antlered bucks would be the only legal targets for the first five days of the season, followed by seven days of concurrent buck-and-doe hunting. The proposal retains the same two-week concurrent deer season in the remaining 18 WMUs. Read more

We’re [NOT] All In This Together

By John C. Street

Right now, all across Pennsylvania, hunters, anglers and trappers are being asked, through their local sportsmen’s clubs, to decide whether they wish to continue being affiliated with – or would prefer disenfranchising from – the National Wildlife Federation. Later this spring, delegates selected by these hunters, trappers and anglers will attend a state-wide conference where they will cast their vote. Read more

Thoughts on Expanding Special Regs Areas

By Gerry Zeiber

During its January meetings, the Pennsylvania Game Commission tabled a proposal to expand the Special Regulations Areas of Southeast and Western Pa. But the proposal to expand WMU 5C’s boundaries was approved unanimously. As one who lives in the western part of Berks County, the thought of possibly being included in this plan makes me shudder. Both the PGC press release and the article in the Feb. 15 edition of Pennsylvania Outdoor News was a bit vague on exactly what areas this expansion would include. Read more

Muddy Waters in the PFBC?

By Bill Miller,
USP Fish & Boat Committee Chairman

It seems that muddy waters aren’t affecting only the PFBC’s hard-working trout hatchery and stocking crews. The fishermen of Pa. are also trying to see through the murky waters to get some straight answers. Being the only customers of the PFBC, we deserve to be kept informed on important issues. We Have a Quality Group in the USP

The following editorial was written and sent to Pa. Outdoor News in response to two articles about antler restrictions that appeared in the Feb. 29 issue of that publication.

By Ken Piper

Since moving to Alabama, I really look forward to getting my issues of Pennsylvania Outdoor News. The first things I usually read are the opinion column and the letters to the editor. The Feb. 29 column “Some Still Argue Antler Restrictions Don’t Work” caught my eye, and I felt compelled to share my thoughts. Read more

USP Hunting License Increase Proposal

Dear Senators and Representatives,

Our level of concerns with the policies and direction of the PA Game Commission (PGC) have no parallel in the 100 + year old history of the PGC, yet we are willing and dedicated to defend it’s independency and help solve it’s financial difficulties. We recognize that to do this rests on the decisions that will come forth from the Pennsylvania General Assembly. We hope and pray that your final decisions will respect the needs of the one-million sportsmen of the Commonwealth in a careful and non-political process of deliberation. To contest the values of hunting shared by the sporting community for decades would be neglectful, yet to defend them would be deeply appreciated. Read Proposal

Unified Sportsmen of Pennsylvania
Expectations of a Scientific Deer Management Plan

1.) We expect a credible deer census to accurately determine how many deer actually exist in Pennsylvania.

2.) We expect to know how many deer can be killed each year based upon the biological carrying capacity for each WMU, without jeopardizing the social benefit of the deer herd for the citizens who live and hunt there.

3.) We expect to know how many deer are killed each year by implementing mandatory reporting systems.

4.) We expect pH studies of the soil to determine if desired plant species can even grow, before condemning deer for the condition of our forests.

The Game Commission and Wildlife Ownership

Before America was settled by Europeans, Indians relied on nature to provide food. What little food they learned to raise themselves was insufficient and so the abundance of nature’s wild game- fish, turkey, deer and bison comprised their main diet. Without these natural and renewable resources the Indians would not have survived. Read Article
